The third son of Edmond Prideaux, he was born at Padstow, Cornwall, on 3 May His mother was a daughter of John Moyle.

After education at Liskeard grammar school and Bodmin grammar school, he went to Westminster School under Richard Busby, recommended by his uncle William Morice. There for three years he lived through the golden days of a prewar cavalry regiment — hunting, racing, polo, garden parties and regimental balls.

It has been the home of the Prideaux family for over years. The house was built in by Sir Nicholas Prideaux, a distinguished lawyer, and was enlarged and modified by successive generations, most notably by his great-great-grandson Edmund Prideaux and by the latter's grandson Rev.
